Working Conditions in Korean Universities

I’m very happy with my job and have no intention of leaving, even though the salary is not the highest in Seoul. The work environment is actually great. The boss is good, the administrative assistants are wonderful, and most importantly, the students are a joy to teach. They are more motivated than any other students I’ve taught (with exceptions of course).

But I’ve often wondered what the other schools pay. I sat down and looked through Dave’s Job Postings. The big-name schools already went through their hiring process about three months ago. This list comes from what is posted now.

Here’s the break down: hours per week, salary with MA listed first if the ad lists a difference. Salary is in million won per month). I used the language of the ad to describe the housing offered. The same for the number of weeks listed for vacations. Some of them are quite vague. Generally speaking, universities do not provided airfare reimbursement, the ones that offer it seem to be in the language centers—which are often little more than hogwans. The severance packages vary, as these are not standard like they are in hogwans.

As the list stands now, most of these jobs are outside of Seoul. The conditions vary much more than I imagined they would. I’d like to hear from people so I can start filling in this list.

Thanks Kevin, EFL Geek, Brian, Lao-Ocean Girl, and others for the info. Others--there are a lot of universities out there. Don't be afraid, go on, send me your info. All the cool people are doing it.

Kwandong University, Gangneung, Gangwondo.

No current openings that I am aware of.
16 hours a week/2.3 million won

housing or allowance provided (they are encouraging taking the allowance)

One vacation must be worked.

Masters is eagerly welcomed but not required.

If 16 hours are not filled with university classes, some kids classes may be given.

Normal classes are for uni students; grades are given and the grades are part of the student's average.

At Smoo Lingua, my current pay (I'm finishing up my third year) is 2.45 million (gross), which includes the W300,000 housing allowance (those clever bastards; housing costs me W450,000/month). I also get W200,000/month extra as a "coordinator's fee." My actual take-home (i.e., net) pay, for most of my time at Smoo, was about 1.85 million. My current take-home pay is about 2 million.

Work hours: the contract stipulates 18 hours/week, but I am currently doing 22. No overtime is being paid for this because we reduced the semester from 8 to 7 weeks; the increase in per-week hours reflects the "scrunching" of the schedule.

Overtime calculation in my department is not straightforward and has been the subject of much acrimony. A reading of the contract would lead one to believe that overtime is calculated on a per-week basis ("if work exceeds 18 hrs/wk, overtime pay will be given according to current university rates," whatever that means). Overtime is actually calculated on a per-semester basis, and one is never paid as much as expected.

Vacation: two months guaranteed: June and December. A "month" is a literal calendar month, i.e., 30-31 days. Vacation might start on the 2nd or 3rd of the month, but if so, it will finish on the 2nd or 3rd as well.

Breaks: we are technically on call between semesters, but we often get a 1 to 1.5-week break between semesters. This was changed a few months ago; the original scheme had us getting 1-week breaks between semesters and between "halves" of the long semesters. Our semesters used to be 12 weeks (spring/fall) and 8 weeks (winter/summer), but this was scrunched to 11 weeks and 7 weeks. The rationale was to (1) give us a slightly longer between-semester break and (2) give the office more time to prep for the beginning of each semester. The end result has been a bit strange: I do appreciate the longer breaks, but don't like working over 20 hours/week, especially when I need time for planning, grading, etc.

Work during vacation: Smoo has never required us to work during June and December. There are no summer/winter camps; extra work is sometimes offered but never required.

Housing: Smoo provides dorm housing for singles and married couples. Something roughly studio-sized for singles (approx. 6-7 pyeong), about twice that size for couples. Dorms mean dorm rules, such as no drinking, no bringing in people of the opposite sex, etc. Conditions vary; while my own dorm has been perfectly satisfactory for me, a colleague of mine complained about how grungy her dorm was. One nice thing about dorm life: no extra utility fees. You can leave your air conditioner on all day.

Degrees: a Master's (specifically, in a language-ed-related field) is preferred but not required. Smoo Lingua has hired people without MAs before.

I hope this helps. You'll have to distill all the above verbiage into a 2-line blurb for your blog post!

Yangjeon ELEMENTARY School. (I know not strictly a University but I think the comparison is quite interesting:)

19 hrs/wk 2.6 million/mnth furnished housing provided or W500000/mnth housing allowance.

4 weeks vacation (2 in summer, 2 in winter) plus 2 weeks of "You can work from home" over spring vacation.

PLUS lunch! every school day!

At least one years experience teaching in Korea and BA req. Some sort of TESOL preferred but not req.

Not on your list:

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST).

Conditions:
1. Teach grad students (no undergrad program, though currently have to teach 1-2 classes of prof's kids (aahh!)) -- full program (all departments) is English-based and students need to publish theses and papers in English prior to graduation

2. 2.4 mill+/month; MA required

3. On-campus housing offerred; no allowance for off-campus living

4. Teach one intersession (summer/winter - 6 weeks

Anonymous said...

So, I guess the question now is: Are these salaries "good"?

Anonymous said...

Sorry -- GIST -- 15 hours per week (Mon-Thurs); hasn't been any classes on Friday in Admin memory.

Joe in Korea said...

Are these "good salaries?" Good question. I'm still waiting for Korea University, Ewha, and the other "top" schools. From what I hear, they pay about 3 mil a month, but that is rumor. Their ads generally say that they offer a "competitive salary" so they don't publish. What I've learned from this is that my place of work isn't as low as I thought. There are other places, but they often have a lot of BS that goes with the job. My workplace is a very good place, in spite of its low salary.

Joe,

Re. Hankuk University of Foreign Studies:

You should indicate which program that is. Hankuk University of Foreign Studies hires EFL teachers for several programs - all with different contract conditions.

I know I was interview for a couple of positions that would have me working 20 hours per-week or more with classes in the summer and winter vacations. Also, housing both on campus and off campus was available. But the hours were brutal. the pay would have amounted to about 4 million won a month.

Joe,

Ehwa pays 40,000,000 won a year for thier instructors:

I have an e-mail from them when I applied and inquired about their salary.

I was invited to an interview with them but didn't go.

That's 3.3 million won a month. I can't recall the number of calssroom hours per-week.

lao-ocean-girl said...

I gave you the wrong info for Hongik University. It's 12 hr/week, not 15. The cap this year is 12 students per class.

Thanks everyone for the updates/corrections.

Dongguk University, Gyeongju.

Courses to teach include: Freshman English, Business English, Video English, Resume Writing and Interview Techniques, and Hagwon-style Language Courses.

Mandatory summer/winter camp (not for all teachers...yet) 3 are scheduled for the next camp. More will probably have to do it in the near future.

Mandatory 5-week long hogwan classes during vacations. 3 Teachers are assigned on a rotation basis.

Mandatory 4 hours/week for 10-weeks hogwan classes during the semester. Teachers are assigned on a rotation basis.

Mandatory "research" committee work each semester, culminating in a workshop presentation.

Three office hours/week, one hour is in the International Lounge.

A university on the fast track to unigwonization.

What's up Joe,
This list is awesome, as we are actually looking for some comparisions to advocate for better benefits for us. Over here at at University of Incheon we are at 2.0 start, 300,000/ housing. Summer/ winter vacation, working 2 weeks of one period. 16 hrs/ wk + 6 office/ marking hours. No complaints, though!

the typical 6-12 weeks of vacation... usually paid or unpaid??

EFL Geek said...

anonymous, of course it's paid. Wouldn't be a very useful vacation if it were unpaid.

Joe in Korea said...

efl geek is right, they are paid.

Some universities are in the five-month range of vacation, regardless of what they actually post. Almost half a year off is not bad. Many of the vacation hours listed are not really accurate. There may be things you are expected to do, but which can be done at home. Some say 8-weeks, but really it is more. Or others will say 8 weeks, but that is true only for the first year. After that it could go up. Sometimes winter or summer classes are required, but are USUALLY paid overtime. Sometimes they are not, as is the case where I am. This is a first year thing, after that, it changes to curriculum work on your own time.

But is it time off? Yes, and no. I have a lot of preparing to do, though I don't have to teach. One reason universities pay foreign teachers less than the locals (never mind the fact that they have a doctorate and most of us don't) is that they are asked to do things that we are not. They are expected to come in to work for much of the vacation period.

hey guys...

I came across your blog while searching for University positions in Korea. It's one of the best posts for information that I've found for information listings on Korean universities hiring English teachers. Any suggestions on how to find out more about who's hiring and when, or should I just look up & e-mail each university individually. I'm in Taiwan teaching now & have my MA in linguistics,... Thanks in advance for any advice

These are all crap salaries made worse by the 40% devaluation in the Korean won since these postings were made. And Korean professors teaching fewer hours earn 20% to 50% more, which is shameful. I once worked in the TESOL program at Woosong University in Daejeon. It pays Ph.Ds 3.2 mil per month plus free housing and medical and you get 4 months of paid vacation. You teach 12 hours a week, half graduate and half undergraduate. Second year professors earn about 3.6 mil. Keemyung in Daegu pays 5 mil.
